The Importance of Writing in the Digital Era

The world that we live in, is changing by the day! The implications of modern technology in our lives are quite remarkable. Imagine a world without it. Imagine a world without texting, let alone one without the great literary works that fill our hearts, give us new perspectives, and inspire change in society.

Writing permeates human life, now both physically and digitally, and it’s here to stay! It’s no surprise that as technology increasingly integrates into our daily lives, the traditional act of writing with a pen has been somewhat forgotten.

The ease of word processing documents, as well as the development of applications that allow us to sync notes across multiple devices, has made the purpose of handwriting almost redundant!

With the digital age transforming our lives and the ways we communicate at a dizzying rate; strong writing skills have taken on a new level of importance in our globalizing world. Let’s explore the importance of writing in this digital age.

Why Is Writing Important in the Digital Age?

The digital writing workspace is convenient for several reasons. A single laptop or tablet can hold all the books and materials a student needs. It also contains tools for research, entertainment activities, and curated music.

The tech devices make learning more accessible. With the push of a button or a tap on a screen, children can activate engaging learning experiences, or they can even record lectures.

However, handwriting forms an integral part of education since the majority of our examinations are still handwritten. Writing skills are critical for your child’s academic future and it’s beneficial for the children to start the practice of writing as early as possible.

A pen and paper allow your child to think more freely and independently. It gives your child the freedom where they can write, circle important points, and add side notes wherever makes sense.

Convenience, however, doesn’t trump old-fashioned writing by hand when it comes to learning. Writing by hand has benefits that technology has not been able to reproduce – yet!

The Benefits of Writing

Develops Cognitive and Motor Skills: The process of observing the letters of the alphabet, memorizing them, and then copying them on paper develops cognitive and motor skills in children. This is extremely important for long-term growth.

Improves Memory: Writing is a longer process compared to typing or keyboarding. It also utilizes the more complex motor skills of the child’s mind. So, the children who write or take notes, understand and memorize the details better than those who type on the computer.

Improves Communication and Reading Skills: Since writing builds memory, it also aids in the development of language, communication, and reading skills. With the help of writing, children learn to retrieve letters and words from their memory better, therefore, learn how to spell more accurately!

Exercises the Brain: The act of writing stimulates the area of the brain that deals with thinking and short-term memory. Writing is the way we learn and understand what we’re thinking. The handwriting and the sequencing of the strokes engage their minds and improve the overall thought processing of the young minds.

Helps in Better Expression: When your child writes essays or compositions, they learn to express themselves better and come up with more ideas. According to studies, children who write more compared to keyboarding also tend to write faster and longer. The development of this skill helps them perform better at school and in examinations.

Boosts Confidence: Handwriting speaks quite a lot about your child’s personality and confidence levels. Appreciation does wonders for a child’s growth! As children practice writing, they develop their own style. With time, their handwriting will also improve which earns them appreciation at school.
